Teaching Pronunciation? Here’s an idea…

For students who want to perfect their American English accent, pick a sound (such as /th/, /r/, or /v/) to focus on each week.  Read aloud a newspaper or magazine article or a passage from a book, with emphasis on correct pronunciation of the target sound.  Have students circle all words with the target sound and ask them to read the article too.  Give instruction on how to make the sound correctly, and repeat the readings during the week to reinforce their learning.  You can make “before and after” audio recordings to gauge students’ progress.
